As a psychologist and psychotherapist, Nijenhuis has diagnosed and treated severely traumatized patients at the Mental Health Care Drenthe, The Netherlands, for over 30 years. For his book Somatoform dissociation: phenomena, measurement, and theoretical issues, he received his Ph.D. title with the highest honours at the Medical Department of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Since 2015, Nijenhuis devotes his time to researching and sharing his knowledge about the psychology and psychobiology of chronic traumatization and dissociation. His latest book publication is The Trinity of Trauma: Ignorance, Fragility, and Control, Volume I and II. A German translation is available. The third volume of this trilogy is called Enactive Trauma Therapy. It will be available from March 2017. A German translation is in progress.

- Appointed by the Dutch Queen as Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion for his outstanding clinical, educational and scientific activities in the field of chronic traumatization in 2004.
- Pierre Janet Writing Award 2000 of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation for the book Somatoform DissociationL Phenomena, Measurement, and Theoretical Issues.
