Recommended reading: Memory and Memory Traces (available in our library)
Memory trace theories, along with closely related forms of representationalism and information-processing models, have long shaped how memory and mind are understood.
In my Seminars, conversations with colleagues and Associates, we have discussed the problems of memory trace theories more than once. Not to mention the closely related problems of representationalism and information processing theories.
The Norwegian psychologist Steinar Svoren decided to become a philosopher as well, and wrote a great dissertation on the fallacies of memory trace theories. Steinar is a good friend and has allowed me to forward his text on to you.
The matters at hand are not easy to grasp, partly because we are so used to thinking in terms of traces and representations. However, studying the issues is, I feel, most rewarding. You can find his thesis in my free online library, the second article listed in the year 2025 (request the Library Password here).
Steinar is open to receiving comments and responding to questions you may have. His email address is listed in the libary.
